The Importance of Proper Beard Care

Beards have graced men’s faces since the beginning of time. The styles, aesthetics and cultural significance of beards have varied widely from age to age and from one society to another. Perhaps someday soon we can do a deeper dive into the historical evolution of beards as fashion, but in this post I want to focus on modern beard care and why it’s so important for those who choose to wear them.  Whether close-clipped stubble for effortless masculine chic, or a longer more rugged look to either honor your inner Viking or a deeper spiritual/religious meaning for you, maintaining a healthy and well-groomed beard plays a crucial role in personal hygiene and skin health. Here are a few reasons why proper beard care is vital:

  1. Promotes Healthy Skin: Regular cleaning and moisturizing of your beard help prevent dandruff and dry skin. This keeps your skin healthy and prevents itchiness and irritation.

  2. Boosts Confidence: A well-maintained beard enhances your appearance and boosts your confidence. It can re-define the jaw line and re-shape your face, giving the illusion of a more “chiseled” look. It also shows that you take pride in your personal grooming and care about your presentation.

  3. Prevents Ingrown Hairs: Regular trimming and proper care prevent ingrown hairs, which can be painful and unsightly.

  4. Reduces Acne: By keeping your beard clean and free from dirt and oil, you can reduce the occurrence of acne and other skin issues.

  5. Neat and Tidy Appearance: Regular grooming, including trimming, brushing, and styling, ensures your beard looks neat and tidy, making a positive impression in both personal and professional settings.

Do’s and Don’ts:

DO: Have a set grooming routine. This doesn’t have to be a long, drawn out 30 minute routine either! A simple wash with moisturizing beard soap, some beard balm and regular brushing (use a wooden or horn comb - never plastic, as it will create static and led to a more frizzy and tangled beard. Use beard oil sparingly, maybe twice a month to aid in hydration and moisturizing.

DON’T use regular soap on your beard (or face for that matter!) Regular soap will dry moisture out of your beard and strip it of its natural oils.

DO: Trim your beard regularly, as this promotes growth and keeps the hair healthy.

DON’T use excessive heat (Blow dryers, hot combs, straighteners, etc.) as this will severely damage your hair. I use an infrared, ionic blowdryer on the lowest setting as opposed     to a metal coiled one that can be far more damaging.

If you have a patchy beard, DON’T SHAVE IT! I know it’s annoying, but give it time. You’ll get there! There are a number of products that can help with patchy beards, such as beard pens and spray powders that can conceal lighter patches and give the appearance of a fuller beard.
